Laser Contouring Systems for Refractory Thickness Profiling

Process Metrix has developed a suite of sensors capable of measuring the remaining lining thickness in vessels used to produce and refine molten metal. Whether mobile or fixed, steel, copper or aluminum, we have a system that can provide the critical...

Laser Contouring System

For more than ten years Process Metrix has been manufacturing both mobile and fixed position laser systems for measuring refractory lining thickness in the molten metals industry. To date these units have all included the Z210i-HT scanner from Riegl. This highly reliable scanner, that operates at 8 kHz, has provided all of our customers with process information they can rely on to determine the state of their ladles, converters, AOD’s, EAF’s and Q-BOP’s.

As good as the Z210i has been, our customers have asked for improved performance, particularly in our ability to detect small features (cracks) in the lining profile. This can only be done with a laser that has a beam diameter equal to or less than the minimum feature size. In response to this request, Process Metrix has developed the HyperScan laser scanner, the first purpose built scanner specific for molten metal applications. Offered as an alternative to the Z210i-HT, the new HyperScan laser brings state-of-the-art scanning technology to the molten metal industry.

The HyperScan System

The HyperScan laser scanner embodies these principle design objectives:

  • Small (4mm) beam diameter
  • High accuracy (±4mm range error) scanning
  • Fast – up to 200,000 Hz scan rates
  • Robust – suitable for the mill environment and the heat loads imposed during scanning high temperature surfaces
  • Eye safe laser wavelength
  • ±40° vertical scan angle, 0-360° horizontal scan angle

The high speed capabilities of HyperScan allow standard resolution scans of a vessel interior in 6-7 SECONDS! You will experience less vessel down time, and higher production availability. In high resolution mode, HyperScan can provide incredibly detailed images of your vessel that can be used to detect cracks, define the region around a tap hole, or the condition of a purge plug. HyperScan’ eye-safe-laser wavelength also eliminates workplace safety concerns.

The HyperScan laser was designed as a drop-in replacement for the Z210i-HT. Therefore, the HyperScan laser and our new software can easily upgrade any unit that uses a Z210i. Bring new life to your older contouring system simply by upgrading the laser scanner.

The HyperScan laser is available in three versions that differ by scan rate: 50kHz, 100kHz and 200kHz. Contract Process Metrix today to find out which one is best for your application!
